The Rivalry
On September 13, all I could think about was 4: 30. The freshman game. St. Joe vs. Lakeshore. I couldn't wait to get out on that big green field in front of all the fans It was a hard, rough game between the two rivals. I played my heart out with energy, excitement, ambition, and anxiety. We came up short by one point, and I would have made the game winning conversion if we wouldn’t have made some of the mistakes we had made earlier in the game.
I couldn’t think of anything else but to run out and take that ugly field of Lakeshore and hit them in the mouth. We ran to our sideline with all excitement and we were all fired up. I had thought about this one particular game since the beginning of the season. We got to the sidelines, and then put on our bright yellow pants, big white jerseys, and those nice shiney blue helmets because they didn’t have any locker rooms for us. So we were all ready and then stretched and warmed up. During this time, everyone was focused on their assignments that they had to do and I ran through every single thing in my head so that I could contribute to my team as much as possible. That final warning on the clock that says 3:00 minutes until kickoff and also it was time for the captains and I to go do the coin toss. We had won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. I ran back to the sidelines. The first whistle of the big game sounded. And we kicked.
The kickoff was a touchback. Our defense was stellar that game and I had a great game with 8 tackles and 3 of those tackles were for loss. We gave up some big plays unexpectedly. Both teams went 3 and out for about the first 4 drives of the game. But then the 5th drive that we took in the middle of the second quarter was well run by our head coach and well executed by our whole offense. Our line blocked, our wide receivers blocked and ran the correct routes and our running back ran threw everyone and ran his heart out. About the 5th play of the drive, it was a 26 power call by the head coach. We all blocked to the right and then our running back made a great read to cut it back left and ran for a 30 yard touchdown. I went over to congratulate him then looked up at the crowd and saw all the fans cheering and all fired up. That kept me energetic and hyped for the rest of the game to never give up and to keep going, hitting hard, and to just keep going no matter how tired I am. The game went along and they went up by a touchdown on a bad pass that was thrown to our wide reciever and then was intercepted by one of their outside linebackers that took it back for a touchdown. After that we had the ball for almost all of the 3rd quarter and then went into the 4th quarter down 12.
At the beginning of the 4th we drove down and scored a touchdown. Then lakeshore got it back and our defense stopped them on 4 straight downs. We got it back down five, with about five minutes left to go in the 4th. We drove down quickly and scored a touchdown. Then coach decided to go for two, and designed the play for me to catch it. The quarterback came back to the huddle and pointed at me and said Naked 25 on blue. We broke the huddle and walked up to the line, and everyone was thinking this is it, and in my mind I was kind of nervous knowing that I could put this game away for us. The quarterback started the count, the center then snapped it, and then he faked the handoff to the running back, rolled out to his right and threw a low ball, I went down to make a great catch, and then the crowd went crazy, everyone on the sidelines was yelling thinking this game was over. We kicked off the ball and it was another touchback and they started at the 20 yard line. It started to rain a little bit, and this is when I was the most hyped and energetic. I went over to the defensive coach, and asked what the play call was, and ran out to lead my defense to victory. I huddled them up, said some positive things letting them know it is not over till it is over. I made 3 tackles in a row, all of them for loss and forced them to go for it on 4th down. They dropped back to pass and they converted it. At this point, we were all soaked and wet. They drove down the field to the 15 yard line with 1 minute and 32 seconds left. They than ran it for 3 straight plays and then got a flag. They put it in the end zone after the flag set them back. After they scored that 6 point touchdown they were down by 1 point. They Went for 2 and got it with 38 seconds left. Then a little while after that the final buzzer sounded and the scoreboard said 28 Lakeshore and 27 Visitor. We came up short but I kept my humbleness and gave everyone credit and kept my head held high.
